2 Syracuse football players charged in burglaries

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) ? Two Syracuse football players are among four university students charged with campus burglaries.

Syracuse police say junior defensive end Markus Pierce-Brewster and junior defensive tackle Davon Walls were charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor petit larceny in connection with the burglary of an apartment Feb. 23. Both players are accused of stealing a flat screen television, an XBOX gaming system, two iPods and XBox games while students were asleep inside the apartments.

"We are very disappointed and do not in any way condone the alleged behavior that resulted in these charges," rookie Syracuse coach Scott Shafer said in a statement. "This does not represent the core values of our program or the conduct expected of student-athletes representing Syracuse football. We will be following the judicial process and will act accordingly."

The players did not enter pleas and were assigned attorneys. Calls to both lawyers were not immediately returned.

Two other students, Erwing Augustin, 20, and Bradley Valik, 20, also were charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor petit larceny in two burglaries.

Pierce-Brewster transferred into the program before last season from City College of San Francisco and appeared in 12 games, recording 30 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Walls, from Brooklyn, N.Y., appeared in three games last year after transferring from Coahoma Community College in Mississippi.

Rocket Internet, the e-commerce startup incubator started by the Samwer Brothers, is once again ramping up its operations in emerging markets. Today it is announcing that Jumia, an Amazon clone?launched last year in Africa, has received a ?20 million ($26 million) investment from Summit Partners. Calif. woman dies after nurse refuses to do CPR

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) ? A dispatcher followed general protocols when she pleaded with a nurse at an independent living facility to perform CPR on a woman who later died in California, a county official said Monday.

Earlier, Glenwood Gardens had defended its nurse, saying she also had followed policy in dealing with the 87-year-old patient.

At the beginning of the Feb. 26 call, the nurse asked for paramedics to come and help the woman who had collapsed and was barely breathing, according to a transcript of the call.

Dispatcher Tracey Halvorson urged the nurse to start CPR.

"I understand if your boss is telling you you can't do it," the dispatcher said. "But ... as a human being ... you know . is there anybody that's willing to help this lady and not let her die?"

"Not at this time," the nurse answered.

During the 7-minute, 16-second call, Halvorson assured the nurse that Glenwood couldn't be sued if anything went wrong with CPR, saying the local emergency medical system "takes the liability for this call," the transcript states.

Later in the call, Halvorson asks, "Is there a gardener? Any staff . anyone who doesn't work for you? Anywhere? Can we flag someone down in the street and get them to help this lady? Can we flag a stranger down? I bet a stranger would help her."

Kern County Fire Department spokesman Sean Collins said Halvorson had more passion in her voice than normal because she thought she was talking with a registered nurse who was refusing to save the woman's life.

"In her mind she had an RN there who was refusing to assist this lady," Collins said. "In this situation she felt the person needed to do something because she's in the same business as us, which is saving lives."

Halvorson is an experienced dispatcher and has worked for the county center for at least a decade. Collins said.

The woman was later declared dead at Mercy Southwest Hospital.

The executive director of Glenwood Gardens, Jeffrey Toomer, defended the nurse's actions, saying she did indeed follow policy.

"In the event of a health emergency at this independent living community our practice is to immediately call emergency medical personnel for assistance and to wait with the individual needing attention until such personnel arrives," Toomer said in a written statement. "That is the protocol we followed."

Toomer offered condolences to the woman's family and said a thorough internal review of the incident would be conducted.

He told KGET-TV that residents of the facility are informed of the policy and agree to it when they move in. He said the policy does not apply at the adjacent assisted living and skilled nursing facilities.

A call to the facility by The Associated Press seeking more information was not immediately returned.

Think of the old news reading experience ? you walked out the front door, picked the newspaper off the lawn, and opened it while walking back. The top half of the front page took most of your attention for the simple reason that it?s hard to hold a newspaper wide open and see where you?re going.? Articles picked for the space ?above the fold? pretty much set your reading.

In the past, a headline only competed with the other articles on the page.? Newspaper printers spent more time deciding which articles appeared above the fold, and less on how to write the headline once people were already there.

But today when you sit down to read the news online, you might as well be opening up a paper the size of Casco Bay.? If your news site arranges articles by popularity (which most do to increase clicks), then the equivalent ?above the fold? articles are based on thousands of readers making split second decisions as to what to click.? That?s a headline decision.

More clicks means more advertising revenue, and more readers who might pay premiums to get access to the site.? If clicks are largely dependent on the headline, then suddenly these few summary words have been thrust into a key place in media.

The new breed of young writers is certainly well trained. Twitter has drilled into them that only catchy short sentences will grab attention. Twitter treats poor writing like nature treats a wounded animal.

The bad news is that we are seeing a move toward more sensational eye catching headlines.? Article content is following right behind.? Good writing on interesting topics with old style descriptive headlines won?t get the clicks, and their writers won?t get compensated for their efforts.

Yet the headline writers who know how to work a sexual innuendo or smutty rumor into a few words will get all the attention.

My colleagues at the Room for Debate blog have initiated a valuable discussion around this question:

Fish plays a starring role in the?Mediterranean diet?that?s supposed to keep us healthy. And yet it?s a?disappearing commodity. Meanwhile, there is growing concern about?what is sustainable, or even?identifiable. Is there a way to meet consumer demand for quality seafood and protect threatened marine life at the same time?

The conversation includes two of my favorite fish mavens ? Paul Greenberg, the author of ?Four Fish,??on the role of sustainable aquaculture (a particular focus of mine) and Callum Roberts, the author of??The Ocean of Life: The Fate of Man and the Sea,??on the value of no-fishing zones.

But there are other important contributions, including a push to re-examine the size limits on lobsters in Maine and other states from?Diane Cowan,?a senior scientist at?The Lobster Conservancy:

The intent of a minimum size is to give lobsters a chance to reproduce at least once. Unfortunately, extreme harvest rates targeting one-pound and 1.25-pound lobsters have led to a situation in which size limits fall short of their aim to increase reproductive output. While part of the problem is that harvest rates minimize the number of lobsters growing to sizes exceeding the maximum, the larger problem is that a vast majority of harvested lobsters are too small to have borne offspring. Worst of all, while lobsters can reach sizes exceeding 40 pounds, intense fishing ? targeting lobsters weighing as little as one pound ? has truncated the size structure of the population in favor of small lobsters.

What she says about lobsters applies to many fish species, as well. In both cases, the goal should be to make sure the sea retains plenty of ?BOFFs,? an acronym used by marine conservationist Carl Safina and Jane Lubchenco, the former administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to describe the ?big old fat females? that are huge egg producers and the cornerstone of healthy marine species populations.
