Concealed Carry To Mean Big Business In QCA - News and ...

?

Gun businesses say sales and demand for classes and training are already booming as Illinois residents begin getting their concealed carry permits.

? ? ?

Taking 16 hours of training to get it, they expect business to just keep going up.

Business owner Tim Baldwin said he and many others have been waiting for Illinois to get a concealed carry law for years.

"We're excited it's finally gotten done, and although not perfect, I think it's pretty good," said Baldwin, co-owner of Shooting Sports in Moline. ? ??

Baldwin took over Shooting Sports in Moline with his partner last year, just in time for Illinois to get the law and give them a big business boost.?

"Certainly it's going to increase business," said Baldwin. "We'll be busier with our training facility, our range will be busier, not only with our instructors and students but other instructors and students."

Baldwin said depending on just how much business takes off, they may expand their range and hire more instructors. And it's not just his business but others offering training that expect to profit too.

"Hopefully it'll be a boost for them and a boost for the economy," said Darin Oberhart, owner of QCI Firearms Training. "Gun sales have been at astronomical levels. Hopefully it will just continue that trend."

? ? ?

Oberhart teaches gun safety courses and his phone has been ringing off the hook with interest. Even businesses that don't offer classes expect to rake in the cash too.

"There will be a boost in business yes, because now people are going to have to come over and get concealed guns" said Randy Fulton, owner of R&K Arms. "Before it was all planking guns, bigger frame guns, that kind of stuff, now you have to come back to concealed carry guns."

? ??

While concealed carry permits and classes aren't available just yet businesses say it's just a matter of time.?

Court upholds Nevada's unique "none" ballot option

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) ? "None of the above," Nevada's perpetual ballot loser, got a legal victory Wednesday and will continue to be an option for voters after a federal appeals court rejected a Republican-backed lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the suit, ruling that the 11 plaintiffs lacked standing.

Nevada is the only state in the nation that that gives voters the option of "none of these candidates" in statewide races ? president, U.S. Senate, state constitutional offices and the Nevada Supreme Court.

But under state law "none" can never win even if it receives the most votes, though it can play spoiler.

Republicans sued last year over the law, fearing "none" could siphon votes from a disgruntled electorate and sway the outcome of a close 2012 presidential and Nevada U.S. Senate race.

The suit argued "none" disenfranchises voters because it has no legal bearing on an election. In legal briefs, attorney Paul Swen Prior argued that votes for "none" are treated as "legal nullities" under the law, while voters who choose "none" are disenfranchised because their choice has no legal standing on the outcome.

Secretary of State Ross Miller, Nevada's chief election officer, however, hailed the ruling as "a triumph for Nevada voters."

"Voters who want to express their dissatisfaction with the federal and statewide candidates on the ballot should have the option and freedom to do it," Miller said.

The suit argued that to be constitutional, Nevada's election law should give more legal weight to "none" by allowing it to win and setting up a process for voters to then decide on another living candidate, such as declaring a vacancy or having a follow-up election.

But the appellate judges, while making no determination on the merits of those arguments, said the plaintiffs' positions "are questionable."

The "none" option has been on the ballot in Nevada since 1976. It was enacted by the Legislature the previous year as a way to combat voter apathy in the wake of the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon. The intent was to give voters a way to voice their displeasure with candidates and elected officials at the ballot box.

"None" has never received the most votes in a general election but is often a popular choice that can and has played spoiler in high-profile races.

It wasn't a factor in last year's hard-fought president contest between President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney. But it played a familiar role in Nevada's U.S. Senate race between Republican Sen. Dean Heller and Democratic challenger Shelley Berkley, a seven-term congresswoman.

Heller defeated Berkley by about 12,000 votes. More than 45,000 votes were cast for "none."

In 1998, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid defeated then Republican Rep. John Ensign by 428 votes, but more than 8,000 voters rejected both men and opted for "none."

iPhone, Android apps from PDFs?

Looking to create standalone apps for iPhone, Android phones, and Android tablets that will present a digital replica of a booklet based on PDFs from the printed version.

I have access to Adobe DPS but I understand it only produces standalone (aka "single folio") apps for the iPad -- so I'm covered there, but need to do the same thing for those other platforms. I prefer a Mac tool but could use a PC one if necessary; this looks like it would work (for Android at least) but it doesn't cover iPhone. Thank you! posted by rleamon to computers & internet (2 answers total)

Symmetry Corp. leases third Milwaukee building, adding 15 jobs

File photo

Symmetry Corp. president Dan Wilhelms said his IT firm is committed to expanding in Milwaukee.

Symmetry Corp. has moved into its third location on Milwaukee?s east side and plans to add 15 jobs locally by the end of the year, the company said Tuesday.

Symmetry, the Milwaukee-based information technology firm, is leasing the building at 1443 N. Prospect Ave. It will use the 7,638 square feet of office space to provide employee training and customer service.

Symmetry will grow its Milwaukee employee base from 75 to 100 by next year. It now has a total staff of 85 at its three Milwaukee locations and satellite offices nationwide, said president Dan Wilhelms.

The company has enjoyed three consecutive years of significant growth. It added 30 jobs last year, Wilhelms said.

?We?re committed to Milwaukee and the east side,? Wilhelms said in a phone interview. ?Hopefully economic factors will allow us to continue to grow in Milwaukee.?

Symmetry?s third facility was built in 1968. The other two company locations are on the National Register of Historic Places: the 19th century Judge Jason Downer house on the lower east side, 1201 N. Prospect Ave., and the Adler Building, 1681 N. Prospect Ave.

PCH CEO Liam Casey appointed to Action Plan for Jobs 2013 Group by Irish Government

The Group will help implement seven "Disruptive Reforms" to create more jobs in Ireland

?Subscribe in a reader --

PCH International Founder and CEO Liam Casey has been appointed by the Irish Government as one of six leading businesspeople to join the Action Plan for Jobs Implementation and Monitoring Group, which will help to implement seven "disruptive reforms" planned for 2013. The aim of the group is to assist in making Ireland more attractive and competitive for jobs and investment.

Liam commented: "I am delighted to be involved in this important initiative - anything "disruptive" appeals to me! We are at a critical time in global commerce where geography is history. We need to identify and go after global opportunities. Irish businesses are world leaders in many fields. Over the past 30 years we have developed great skills in many areas, in particular in technology and pharmaceuticals - we need to continue this.

"We should attract more foreign companies into Ireland and we need to encourage Irish entrepreneurs to build more companies like Kerry Group, CRH, Glen Dimplex, Kentz, Dairymaster, Digicel, Ryanair, Smurfit Kappa etc. There are opportunities in food production, agriculture, ICT and energy efficiency. Through the Disruptive Reforms, government and business people can work together to nurture these skills and ensure that Irish people and Irish companies continue to make a huge impact around the world and create jobs in Ireland."

The Seven Disruptive Reforms include:

1. JobsPlus - over two years the State will pay ???1 of every ???4 it costs an employer to recruit a long-term unemployed person off the Live Register

2. ICT Skills - provide an additional 2,000 ICT graduate level professionals in 2013, and by 2018 lead Europe in terms of ICT graduates as a percentage of all third level graduates

3. Energy Efficiency - the Government will create a ???70million Energy Efficiency Fund to support 20 major projects in 2013 and ultimately create 5,000 jobs

4. Trading Online - get 2,000 more small businesses trading online in 2013 and 2014, with the creation of 3,200 jobs

5. Business Licences - create a single licensing application system for up to 25 licences in the retail sector, saving retailers over ???20million per annum

6. Big Data - make Ireland one of the leading countries in Europe for Big Data, a sector growing by up to 40% per annum

7. Health Innovation Hub - Government will establish a world-renowned centre to establish Ireland as a leading location for start-up and growing medtech and healthcare companies

Founder of Blackwater security co. writing memoir

NEW YORK (AP) ? The founder of the private security firm Blackwater Inc. is writing a memoir.

Erik Prince has a deal with Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Random House. The publisher announced Monday that the book, currently untitled, is scheduled for November.

Prince, a former Navy SEAL who has rarely spoken to the media, said in a statement released by Portfolio that he was anxious to counter Blackwater's controversial image.

"Hundreds of American citizens employed by private military contractors, or PMCs, would lose their lives helping our government wage wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, only to have their memory tarnished by the unfair and/or ignorant depiction of PMCs as profiteers, 'jackbooted thugs,' or worse by the media and the political establishment that asked for our help in the first place," Prince said. "It's partly to honor their memory that I've written this book."

Blackwater was founded in North Carolina in 1997 by Prince, whose book will also challenge numerous reports that his company was awarded no-bid security contracts from the U.S. government at the beginning of the Iraq War. Blackwater became the focus of international scrutiny and ongoing legal action when guards were involved in a series of high-profile shootings.

A group of investors bought Blackwater from Prince in 2010 and renamed it.
