Findings published in March Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation have implications for translational research into brain-mediated immune defenses, infection control practices and cognitive rehabilitation strategies after stroke and brain injury

West Orange, NJ. February 28, 2013. The March 2013 issue of Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the medical journal of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, features an article by Kessler researchers Pasquale Frisina, PhD, Ann Kutlik, BA, and A.M. Barrett, MD. Left-sided brain injury associated with more hospital-acquired infections during inpatient rehabilitation (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.apmr.2012.10.012) has implications for further research into brain-mediated immune defenses, infection control practices and cognitive rehabilitation strategies to improve outcomes after stroke and traumatic brain injury. The study was supported by Kessler Foundation and the National Institutes of Health (grant nos. R01NS055808, K24HD062647).

The authors, a team of stroke specialists from Kessler Foundation and Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, report findings of a retrospective study of 2236 inpatients with brain lesions caused by traumatic brain injury or stroke. Hospital-acquired infection (HAI), a common complication that adversely affects outcomes and costs, was defined as infection diagnosed within 48 to 72 hours of admission. Of the 163 patients identified as having hospital-acquired infections, 60.1% had left-sided lesions. This finding was consistent with the hypothesis that a left-dominant brain immune network (LD-BIN) may influence the occurrence of HAI during inpatient rehabilitation for stroke and TBI.

These findings may help healthcare providers predict who is most susceptible to HAI, according to lead author Pasquale Frisina, PhD, which could help reduce mortality rates, control costs of care and improve outcomes. "The study indicates that antisepsis may not be the best or sole method to manage infection risk after stroke and brain injury," said Dr. Frisina. "Future research should focus on ways to optimize the LD-BIN to improve health. These may include brain stimulation techniques such as direct electrical stimulation of the prefrontal brain or behavioral techniques such as mental/cognitive exercise." He added that this investigative approach might lead to novel interventions aimed at increasing infection resistance, rather than on reducing or eradicating pathogens.

"Clinicians rarely think about the brain and immunity," noted A.M. Barrett, MD, "but the balance between left and right brain activity is known to affect our infection resistance. I'm proud to be part of scientific activities that ask these kinds of innovative questions, and get answers that become the basis for new, improved processes for clinical care."

River regulation influences land-living animals

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Forest-living insects and spiders become less abundant and birds are adversely affected along regulated rivers. Three different studies by ecologists at Ume? University in Sweden show that river regulation has a negative effect also on land-living animals.

It is already well known that river regulation influences salmon migration, aquatic insects and streamside vegetation, but effects on land-living animals have been poorly studied.

When free-flowing rivers become regulated, there is a reduction in the number of aquatic insects that, during spring and summer, emerge and fly onto land where they become food for land-living animals.

"Our studies show that the number of flying insects is lower along regulated rivers than along free-flowing rivers. This results in fewer forest-living insects and spiders along regulated rivers, as the resource they feed upon -- emergent aquatic insects -- is reduced," says ecologist Micael Jonsson, the lead author on two of the articles.

Together with a group of researchers, he has compared the abundance of insect-feeding animals along similar river stretches at four regulated and four free-flowing large rivers in northern Sweden and the Finnish Kemi River. Along these rivers, flying and ground-dwelling insects were caught. The flying insects were caught with a net mounted on the top of a moving car, and the ground-dwelling insects and spiders were caught in pitfall traps.

The research team also shows that birds are adversely affected by river regulation. Besides a standardised bird survey, nest boxes were used to investigate breeding success of insectivorous birds. The study species, the Pied Flycatcher, is a relatively common species and prefers to use nest boxes.

The results show that adult Pied Flycatchers breeding along regulated rivers lost more weight after their eggs were hatched and fewer of the chicks survived, because their food resource -- the insects -- was less abundant. Along one of the regulated rivers, the survival of the chicks was even lower than what is required for the species to persist.

There were also signs of whole bird communities being impacted by river regulation. Aquatic insect emerge and fly onto land before terrestrial insects peak in numbers. The aquatic insects are therefore an important food resource for birds early in the season, while, normally, birds are seen foraging away from aquatic systems later in the season.

"We could see that such seasonal movements of whole bird communities differed between regulated and free-flowing rivers," says Micael Jonsson.

That the effects are still visible half a century after regulation of these rivers was initiated clearly indicates that the changes are permanent. The studies also highlight the fact that different types of ecosystems influence each other via resource flows, and that changes in one ecosystem therefore affect plant and animals in nearby ecosystems.

"Therefore, there are even stronger reasons to question the use of biological insecticides to reduce the numbers of mosquitoes along rivers in central Sweden and elsewhere in the world, because it most likely results in poorer living conditions for a range of land-living animals."

The studies are published in the international journals River Research and Applications, Ibis, and Ecological Research.

The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising is celebrating its 21st annual ?Art of Motion Picture Costume Design? exhibition, which features costumes from films that have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

The exhibition has been open since Feb. 12, and has already seen visitors from all over Southern California, as well as from places such as Mexico, Brazil and Japan, according to FIDM alumni fashion designer and ?Project Runway? star Nick Verreos.

The walls are lined with vision boards, black boards with sketches of clothing a character should wear, color swatches, textures for the clothes, and other details. Each board has fabric scraps to help bring these ideas to life, along with a complete final sketch and a computer-generated picture of the characters in the Oscar-nominated films.

?We had a lot of connections with the Costume Guild and Costume Design and we thought, why not showcase the costumes of the films that are released every year?? Verreos says. ?It was the perfect marriage, and so here we are, 21 years later.?

According to Verreos, deciding which movies will be showcased is a process that is done by chance.

?It?s mostly having a pretty good guess which movies will be nominated,? he says.

Verreos says the costumes are brought in ?literally a week after they?ve been nominated.?

?I have a feeling that somebody?s telling them secrets behind the scenes,? he says.

Several of the costume designers were at last week?s opening night gala for the exhibition, according to Verreos. He also says that FIDM tries to showcase clothing designs from alumni.

?We always like to make sure we feature designers who came from FIDM,? he says.

Verreos also describes which costumes catch his eye.

?I really love the fantasy ones, like ?Snow White and the Huntsman,?? he says. ?It really almost represents runway couture. When we see those costumes Charlize Theron wore as the queen, they?re very Alexander McQueen, and I?m drawn to that as a fashion designer myself.?

Aramis Richards, who is studying fashion design at Los Angeles Trade Tech college, is a fan of the late Eiko Ishioka, who worked on the film ?Mirror Mirror.?

Richards likes how Ishioka was able to ?use all of the colors of the color palette and the phenomenal way her choice of colors brings everything together?.

Richards also feels costume designer Paco Delgado did a brilliant job with his work in ?Les Miserables.?

?[Delgado] really kept true to the traditional time period, but added just enough color to not have the costumes be too dark,? he says.

FIDM museum and gallery is open and free to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at 919 South Grand Ave., in downtown Los Angeles, just blocks away from the world famous Staples Center and L.A. Live.

The exhibition will be on display until April 27.

Online Poker Forums: Winding through the Maze | Poker Player ...

By Wendeen H. Eolis

The history of Internet-based poker forums is as instructive as it is colorful, from its raw roots in the late 1980?s at?a forum dominated by zealous blackjack counters and systematic craps players to the latest debates by legal experts fueled by Howard Lederer?s storytelling about the rise and fall of his Full Tilt Poker site in interviews and follow-up full of fanfare.

Poker Forums: The world at large!

Today the lives and lifestyle of poker players and poker businesses are chronicled and?dissected.?They are subjected?to all manner of online scrutiny, chatter, and commentary?to the delight and chagrin of the industry?s inhabitants, part-time warriors, devoted enthusiasts, dedicated personnel and visionary entrepreneurs--around the world.

Increasingly poker forum participants are the first to shed light on a crisis or breaking news in the industry. Some ignite raging flame wars for sport, while others provide intellectual food for thought, and a few visionaries test their brainstorms and solicit feedback on their grand?plans at their favorite forums.???

The expanding breadth and depth of content has also attracted attention far beyond the community it was designed to serve, including investigators associated with federal and state government agencies, ?the judiciary in developing opinions for court decisions, and legislative bodies responsible for making laws to govern gambling activity. ?

These days, poker forums provide regular reading for Congressional staff and legislators across the country, according to a survey recently conducted by Eolis International Group which has submitted a white paper to a law firm that advises the executive branch of federal government on online, commercial and tribal gaming matters.

At the end of the day, however, no one is consistently more interested in or intrigued by online poker forums than the poker world itself. From the early years of Wild West acceptance of ?anything goes? to their emergence as hubs for research as well as sophisticated discourse and problem solving, these sites typically appeal to posters and lurkers?with a zest for gamesmanship, confidence in their gambling skills, and an insatiable thirst for information on? happenings inside the perimeter of the poker universe. Today?s poker forums showcase the power, peril, and evolution of free speech in an Internet driven world.

A Big Choice Awaits the Forum Enthusiast

In this two part article we look at the anatomy of poker forums and shine a light on a small sample of them. RGP is highlighted as an originator; BARGE is spotlighted for its expanded appeal; twoplustwo demonstrates the results of harnessing a significant audience through the use of moderators; Wednesday Poker Discussion Group showcases the ability? of a forum to be combined with live events to enhance communication within a city and beyond it; and finally we get insights from pocketfives.com which focused from the beginning on making?sense of? forum contributors as much as the contributions; chasing down? ?Who ?s Who? among the most avid anonymous posters around the globe.
?
Who are the key players? Who are the moderators? Do moderated forums stymie free speech? Do they enhance civil discourse? Should anonymous posters be taken seriously? How do you follow a thread? How have poker forums affected industry movers and shakers?positively or negatively? Do flamers succeed in trouncing their prey? How does one counteract a smear campaign? Will the Internet veer toward lawlessness?or more conventional rules applied to libel in the foreseeable future? Who's posts should? you trust? ?And, most important of all---how can you figure out who and what is reliable when you find the information at an online poker forum. ?

These are questions that have been asked and answered across the country in a six month nationwide probe into the world of poker forums?including conversations with founders of sites, well-known posters, moderators and lesser known participants as well as a world of savvy lurkers that rarely express their views for public consumption.

Poker Forums: Poker Strategy

?Let us begin the journey with a tip of the hat to all of the forums that offer strategy discussions, coaching, and training and related videos as well as poker book reviews, general gambling advice, reliable referrals to accounting and legal services etc. All of the sites in our sample are known for these discussions, but for the most part we point the laser beam on participant involvement and commitment to inform, debate, advocate, and challenge poker businesses and poker?poker players.?As one sage poker forum poster quipped, "Beyond the insular community of my poker friends,?I am? caught up in daily discussions?about matters of money, reputation, and stature." And so it is on poker forums!??
?
The analysis of gossip and news on these forums is variably illuminating,??often transmitted from behind a curtain of hidden identity, rarely mistake-free, and too frequently?presented as gospel?at least until the first vociferous critic takes the stage. But there is no denying that?forums?present myriad opportunities and used artfully have an abundance of merit.

PokerStars Respects the Online Poker Community

PokerStars is a prime example of a company that has taken advantage of the benefits.?A uniquely enlightened small company, in its earliest days, Poker Stars saw the wisdom of following the conversations at the?emerging poker forums, taking note of articulate and sound thinkers for roles in their nascent operations, including the company's top executive in marketing.?
?
Some ten years later,?in a splashy brochure for the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the Company cited the importance of feedback it received over the years and personnel selections it made from the this community. And?even while in?the midst of its feud with the US Department of Justice last year,??the Company? green lighted (quietly) the sponsorship of a lavish banquet? for online forum enthusiasts who had taken to a land-based??casino to party and talk poker,?signaling its continued support of a vibrant interactive poker community far beyond its immediate market.?

History of Poker Forums

Now, let us turn back the clock of time to trace a bit of history in the world of online poker discussion groups.?? Rec.gambling. was established in 1989; it notably attracted?hard core gamblers fixated on the development of winning systems. In the early 90?s it attracted to its ranks card aficionados beyond blackjack counters and?gamers skillful at bankroll management.?The poker players?soon overtook part of the discussions, demanding?a sub-set? which came to be known?as rec.gambling.poker?around 1995.

In 1991, however, the first BARGE event was established?before it became known either as the Big August (or Annual) Rec(reational) Gambling Excursion. The excursions of? online forum members?to brick and mortar casinos?were an immediate success. BARGE has not only survived to become the poker forum with perhaps the broadest intellectual exchanges, but also it has spawned many regional members to plan special live events around the country with other ?ARG? gatherings?annually over the years.

By most accounts, however, it was poker author and theorist, Mason Malmuth who most effectively harnessed broqad scale interest?in moderated online poker discussions. He has grown the twoplustwo poker forum into a must read site for movers and shakers of the poker world, devotees of the game, mainstream media focused on the business of poker, and? government officials tasked with poker-based investigations.
While ?RGP? posters may have gotten ?their biggest publicity boost from a trio of cheaters who long monopolized the forum with criticism of casinos and players they themselves had taken to the cleaners, other forums gained steam with less volatile fare. Some emerged as great strategy discussion sites, others served special interests of an online poker gaming site to build a customer base.?Others? have had more pointed appeal?such as the Wednesday Poker Discussion Group which got its start in Atlantic City but later?took up?residence in the City of Las Vegas with a welcoming forum and land-based- events for its cultivated membership and guests from around the world.? ?

And?the initiative of a couple of other curious poker players interested in learning who was who?among their forum??brethren on poker forums, opened up pocketfives.com? with a dogged determination to?build a loyal client base not just with interesting topics for discussion , but with more knowledge as to?identity of? major contributors in the online poker forum world.

Next PPN Tips Off Readers on the Ins and Outs of Poker Forums

The value in a poker?forum ?lies in understanding its mission, its population, its most prolific speakers,??its controls and the quality of a given contribution. The devil is in the details!? Part 2 of this article? addresses these issues in the next edition of? PPN.

Editor?s Note: Wendeen H. Eolis is CEO of Eolis International Group, an internationally recognized legal consultancy?legal consultancy. Ms. Eolis has?also?served as first assistant/ senior advisor to NY Governor George E. Pataki. Her responsibilities included gaming affairs and an initiative to legalize gambling. A proponent of poker as a game of skill, Ms. Eolis has to her credit 10 record-setting performances for a woman in major tournament competition including? first woman to cash at the WSOP main event? (and first to do so twice) and winner?of the European Open. This article and related research is part of material planned for use in connection with other writings of the author. Bielefeld physicist Andy Thomas takes nature as his model

This press release is available in German.

Scientists have long been dreaming about building a computer that would work like a brain. This is because a brain is far more energy-saving than a computer, it can learn by itself, and it doesn't need any programming. Privatdozent [senior lecturer] Dr. Andy Thomas from Bielefeld University's Faculty of Physics is experimenting with memristors electronic microcomponents that imitate natural nerves. Thomas and his colleagues proved that they could do this a year ago. They constructed a memristor that is capable of learning. Andy Thomas is now using his memristors as key components in a blueprint for an artificial brain. He will be presenting his results at the beginning of March in the print edition of the prestigious Journal of Physics published by the Institute of Physics in London.

Memristors are made of fine nanolayers and can be used to connect electric circuits. For several years now, the memristor has been considered to be the electronic equivalent of the synapse. Synapses are, so to speak, the bridges across which nerve cells (neurons) contact each other. Their connections increase in strength the more often they are used. Usually, one nerve cell is connected to other nerve cells across thousands of synapses.

Like synapses, memristors learn from earlier impulses. In their case, these are electrical impulses that (as yet) do not come from nerve cells but from the electric circuits to which they are connected. The amount of current a memristor allows to pass depends on how strong the current was that flowed through it in the past and how long it was exposed to it.

Andy Thomas explains that because of their similarity to synapses, memristors are particularly suitable for building an artificial brain a new generation of computers. 'They allow us to construct extremely energy-efficient and robust processors that are able to learn by themselves.' Based on his own experiments and research findings from biology and physics, his article is the first to summarize which principles taken from nature need to be transferred to technological systems if such a neuromorphic (nerve like) computer is to function. Such principles are that memristors, just like synapses, have to 'note' earlier impulses, and that neurons react to an impulse only when it passes a certain threshold.

Thanks to these properties, synapses can be used to reconstruct the brain process responsible for learning, says Andy Thomas. He takes the classic psychological experiment with Pavlov's dog as an example. The experiment shows how you can link the natural reaction to a stimulus that elicits a reflex response with what is initially a neutral stimulus this is how learning takes place. If the dog sees food, it reacts by salivating. If the dog hears a bell ring every time it sees food, this neutral stimulus will become linked to the stimulus eliciting a reflex response. As a result, the dog will also salivate when it hears only the bell ringing and no food is in sight. The reason for this is that the nerve cells in the brain that transport the stimulus eliciting a reflex response have strong synaptic links with the nerve cells that trigger the reaction.

If the neutral bell-ringing stimulus is introduced at the same time as the food stimulus, the dog will learn. The control mechanism in the brain now assumes that the nerve cells transporting the neutral stimulus (bell ringing) are also responsible for the reaction the link between the actually 'neutral' nerve cell and the 'salivation' nerve cell also becomes stronger. This link can be trained by repeatedly bringing together the stimulus eliciting a reflex response and the neutral stimulus. 'You can also construct such a circuit with memristors this is a first step towards a neuromorphic processor,' says Andy Thomas.

'This is all possible because a memristor can store information more precisely than the bits on which previous computer processors have been based,' says Thomas. Both a memristor and a bit work with electrical impulses. However, a bit does not allow any fine adjustment it can only work with 'on' and 'off'. In contrast, a memristor can raise or lower its resistance continuously. 'This is how memristors deliver a basis for the gradual learning and forgetting of an artificial brain,' explains Thomas.

General mechanism that accelerates tumor development discovered

Feb. 24, 2013 ? Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled cell division and growth. In order to identify new therapeutic targets through which to tackle the disease, scientists seek to clarify the mechanisms that control the expression of genes that favor the development of tumors, in processes such as uncontrolled cell division. Nature has just published a paper by the lab headed by Ra?l M?ndez, ICREA professor at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona). The study describes a mechanism controlled by the CPEB1 protein that affects more than 200 genes related to cell proliferation and tumor progression. The mechanism, which was discovered using Hodgkin lymphoma cells, has been proposed as a general regulatory system that enhances the spread of cancer.

The researchers describe that CPEB1 shortens a highly specific region of RNAs (RNAs are the molecules that carry gene information for protein synthesis). This region holds most of the signals that determine whether an RNA molecule is made into a protein or not. "CPEB1 "takes off the brakes" for hundreds of RNAs that stimulate cell desdifferentiation and proliferation, allowing them to be made into proteins; however, in addition to removing the brakes in the nucleus, this protein accompanies RNA to the cytoplasm, where it speeds up the production of these proteins," explains the senior author of the paper Ra?l M?ndez, head of the "Translational control of cell cycle and differentiation" group at IRB Barcelona.

Ra?l M?ndez is an expert on the CPBE protein family, a type of RNA-binding protein that has a positive and crucial role in early embryo development. "CPEB proteins are necessary during development and also during tissue regeneration via stem cells in adults, but if the programme governed by CPEBs is continually switched on, cells divide when they are not supposed to and form a tumor," explains M?ndez. The CPEB family comprises four proteins, which compensate each other's normal function but which have specific activities in diseased states. "This finding is positive from a therapeutic viewpoint because it means that if you remove CPEB1 from healthy cells, its function can be taken over by any other CPEB protein. In contrast, in tumors only CPEB1 has the capacity to shorten these regions, thus affecting only tumor cells," states Italian researcher Felice Alessio Bava, first author of the paper, and post-doctoral fellow with M?ndez's group who, this year, has obtained his doctorate degree through the "la Caixa" International Fellowship Programme. This study provides further evidence of the potential of CPEB proteins as therapeutic targets. In 2011, in a study published in Nature Medicine, M?ndez identified that CPEB4 "switches on" hundreds of genes linked to tumor growth. This new study explains that the overexpression of CPEB4 in tumors is because CPEB1 has also "released its brakes." "The fact that these proteins control each other is also advantageous from a therapeutic point of view," asserts M?ndez, "because partial inhibition, by a drug, would be amplified, thus allowing tumor cell reprogramming. The amplification should make it easier to find a viable compound."

The lab has developed a system to screen therapeutic molecules for a drug that can inhibit the action of CPEB in tumors while having few secondary effects on healthy cells. "There is no drug currently available that influences the regulation of gene expression at this level. Our findings open up a pioneering therapeutic window. We are optimistic about the potential of CPEB proteins as targets," says M?ndez.

The action of CPEB proteins should be considered in the design of other therapeutic strategies

The study published in Nature includes a meticulous genomic analysis of RNA molecules that are processed in different ways depending on whether CPBE1 is present. The study provides a list of between 200 and 300 of such genes, that is to say, those that would have the region holding regulatory signals removed. This is precisely the region where microRNAs -- small molecules regulating the translation of this RNA to protein -- bind. "Many antitumor therapies attempt to interfere with microRNA binding, but we have now revealed that CPEB proteins remove these regions beforehand. The pharmaceutical companies that are developing such compounds will be able to predict whether their targets are suitable approaches or not," explains the scientist.

The study has involved the collaboration of the group led by Juan Valc?rcel at the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), an expert in RNA nuclear processing, and that of Roderic Guig?, an expert in biostatistics and also at CRG. This study received funding from the Consolider RNAreg consortium of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competition and the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia).

Moderate climate warming could melt permafrost

Ancient cave formations in Siberia reveal effects of warmer past on frozen ground

Ancient cave formations in Siberia reveal effects of warmer past on frozen ground

A stalagmite?s past may help reveal Earth?s future. By studying Siberian cave formations as old as 500,000 years, researchers have found that even moderate climate warming may set off significant thawing of permafrost.

If such extensive thawing of frozen soil occurred today, it could trigger a massive release of greenhouse gases, scientists report online February 21 in Science. Permafrost locks in huge amounts of carbon, so if the frozen ground thaws, much of the carbon could convert to carbon dioxide and methane and boost global warming.

During an era with average temperatures just 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than preindustrial times, permafrost melted in areas that today are frozen year-round, the researchers report. Alarmingly, this melting came with a change in climate less than the 2 degrees that the United Nations has set as a target for averting catastrophic effects of warming, says Ted Schuur of the University of Florida, Gainesville, who was not involved in the study.

The new research, he says, is the first to shed light on permafrost from hundreds of thousands of years ago. ?It's nice to look back in the past and see what's already happened on the Earth, and that gives us some confidence about our future predictions,? Schuur says.

Mineral deposits in Siberian caves add layers much like trees add rings. Researchers searched in the formations for clues on permafrost?s history and found that just a 1.5? Celsius rise could thaw permafrost in areas that are completely frozen now.

Researchers can use soil and ice to calculate the age of existing ? but not past ? permafrost.

Anton Vaks of the University of Oxford and an international team probed what happened to permafrost in warmer climates long ago by studying speleothems, ancient cave formations that include stalactites on cave ceilings and stalagmites on cave floors. These formations grow as mineral-laden water seeps into caves. In areas with permafrost, that only happens when the climate is warm enough to cause thawing, the researchers say. So determining the age of speleothem layers gave the researchers an indirect way to study ancient thawing permafrost.

Vaks and his team sampled speleothems from six caves along a path from northern Siberia south to the Gobi Desert. They dated layers going back 500,000 years by measuring the amounts of certain radioactive elements within the layers.

In nearly all of the warm periods studied, layers grew on speleothems in areas that today have partial permafrost cover, the researchers found. During the warmest period studied, some 400,000 years ago, global temperature was 1.5 degrees higher than in preindustrial times. Only during that period did speleothems grow in the cave farthest to the north.

That suggests that 1.5 degrees of warming was enough to thaw permafrost even in areas that are fully covered today. And the finding implies the same could happen in the future, says George Kling of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. ?Our challenge is to predict how much and how fast the carbon currently frozen in permafrost will enter the atmosphere,? he says.

Vladimir Romanovsky of the University of Alaska Fairbanks praises the study but warns against generalizing its findings to permafrost in other regions of the globe, noting that the method has some uncertainty. ?Permafrost could be only one of the possible causes of growing or not growing of speleothems.? One possibility is that fractures in still-frozen permafrost could allow water to seep through, he says.

Another concern is that the method the researchers used might not detect partial thawing. If that had happened, water may not have reached caves, and speleothems would not have grown, Romanovsky says. But even partial thawing could change the climate, he warns, by turning previously locked-up carbon into greenhouse gases.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S IV launch on March 14th in NYC

It was true. And then it wasn't. Now, here at MWC in Barcelona, Samsung has finally confirmed its rumored March 14th launch event for the much-anticipated Galaxy S IV. The smartphone giant's latest flagship is set to debut in New York City, apparently by popular demand. "We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year," Samsung Electronics' mobile division chief JK Shin told Edaily news. "This time we changed the Venue (to New York)... as we were bombarded with requests from US mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country." As with any such announcement, details are sparse at best, so we'll need to wait a few more weeks before confirming specs and appearance for the Galaxy S III successor. But, as always, you're welcome to shout out your best guesses in the comments.

You can stop worrying about the economy and the so-called recession because this "underground" trader is about to tell you how... With My System You Can Make Money from the Stock Market During the Recession... No Matter How Bad the Economy Gets! And You Can Do It In 15 Minutes a Day! It's time to STOP watching your portfolio shrink, and START doing something about it! Keep reading to discover exactly how to create a huge monthly income by making a killing from the market REGARDLESS of whether it goes up or down! (This is NOT just for "Traders". This is also for ANYONE who has money in the stock market, or who wants to START making real money from the market... even if you've never made a trade in your life.) (NOTE: The course contains FULL SIZE videos so you can see exactly what is happening.) ? From: Bauser Moretti Date: Penny Stock Castaways FREE 137 Page eBook Little known technique produces surging profits First Name: Email: We respect your email privacy ? Dear future "elite" trader, Let me tell you something I hate, and then I'll tell you something I love. I HATE seeing good people lose money in the stock market. Nobody likes losing money. I've been there and done that. Perhaps that's why I have compassion for the millions of people who are currently losing so much of their financial worth. People are losing their stock portfolios, losing their 401k's, losing their jobs due to the sour economy, and just generally getting spanked by Wall Street. Unfortunately, I can't help the "masses" avoid financial loss. It's just a part of how the game is played. Someone is always going to lose money. However, I CAN help those who are willing to help themselves. And since you're here reading this page, that includes you :-) In other words, someone is always going to lose money, but that "someone" DOESN'T have to be you! And what do I love? I LOVE empowering people to achieve success in their lives. So I guess that this love and hate are what motivated me to create the The Profitology Trading System for you. You will NOT find this system being taught by ANYONE else, and it absolutely has the potential to drastically change your life for the better! However, I'm NOT going to feed you a bunch of "get rich quick" hype, because that's not what the course is about, nor is it my style. Instead, I'm going to get straight to the point and just tell you... What this course is all about What it will do for you What is included And how you'll be able to access it This Has Been 20 YEARS In The Making! First, I want you to know that this program was NOT just conceived in the last few weeks and packaged as a product to sell. This course is the result and culmination of 20 years of thinking, planning, learning and practicing the material that you will receive. The reason why I decided to teach you my methods is revealed in this letter. I'm not going to hide anything. I want to be very clear from the outset... Unlike many people who teach options and growth stocks, I am NOT a former market maker or specialist or a licensed professional in the financial industry. I am a retail investor just like you. The difference is that I found a way to be successful and profitable trading stocks and options as a REAL business from my home office. The business methods I use?are also used?by professional hedge fund managers and market professionals who rarely, if ever, talk about their strategies. So you're probably asking yourself, "Why would he give away these secrets?" To answer that question, I will tell you that there are three reasons why I want to teach you this business... 1) There's no reason not to teach you my secrets. Seriously. I have nothing to lose. The markets are huge and worldwide and anyone can trade them without decreasing the opportunity. In fact it would only make things better. The more traders, the more money we can make and the more liquid the market becomes. It's really a win-win-win. Unlike other businesses - such as the one I have been involved in for the last 9 years (Internet marketing)- this business only gets BETTER as more people?do it. 2) I am a business person but I am also?a teacher. I have been teaching people how to use the Internet to start a business since 1999.?I have taught thousands of people how to make their living online so?teaching is?something I love to do. There are not many people who really understand this business and are willing to teach it to others. 3) Frankly, a little extra money from selling this course means more I can put to good use in my?trading business. Obviously I put my money where I get the largest return for the amount invested.?Most of the?money I make from selling this course goes directly into my trading business. I don't know what your abilities are or how fast you can learn this business as I teach it, so I will never tell you how much you could make but 5% (or much more) per month is a very reachable goal. Returns can be as high as 62.5%?(ROM) - that's $1,000 for every $1,600 invested. But let me explain why this course is different from anything you may have seen before... Most people think the markets are too risky and their approach is "Hit or Miss", pure speculation, or worse... GAMBLING! I will tell you right now... my trading system is NOT gambling! Bottom line: I treat trading as a real business. In fact, I don't even consider myself to be an 'investor' or 'speculator' or 'trader' in the traditional sense. The truth is, and this is exactly how I see myself: I am an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur I seek opportunities in the market as well as?engage in buying and selling activities to generate the highest return on my investment and then simply manage my risk. My product is options and growth stocks. I buy and sell them to make money. All businesses buy and sell to make money - I just do it with stocks and options. All good businesses manage based on numbers and ratios - I do the same thing - I manage by the numbers! All businesses plan for profits and?create opportunities?for the largest return on investment (ROI) possible - I do too, except I?create opportunities?for the largest return on margin (ROM). I know exactly what my maximum profits are going to be before I place a trade. I don't guess or speculate - I have a plan. Then I simply manage the position and, if necessary, adjust my positions to remain profitable?or cut my losses through smart risk management technics and collect my profits at the end of the trading cycle (monthly). This is an "Evergreen Business". Even as the markets shift, and the economy changes... this system will always work! This business will never change...?the principles, once you learn them, are yours forever. You could learn these and hand them down to your children and grandchildren. The basics of this business will never change because the underlying the principles will never change. That's why I call?it an 'evergreen' business. Unlike franchises or other types of consumer or business-to-business markets, the stock and option markets?have been around for hundreds of years. And even though the markets move and change in some ways, the principles have been the same for the past 200+ years. How did I discover how to start a stock?and option business? One day I woke up one day to find a little extra cash sitting in a money market earning 1.5% a year. The next year it was earning 3%... wow - 3% a year. I felt my money should be put to better and more productive use and I started looking into all kinds of franchise opportunities and other businesses to invest in... but they all had one drawback - the financial investment was large but so was the investment of time... something I really didn't have as a father of four. So after years of 'hit or miss' trading I started thinking about?trading as a real business about 2 1/2 years ago?- buying and selling?stocks and options as?a 'business'. I didn't know if it could be done, but the idea intrigued me. I knew somebody, somewhere was making a killing in the markets and I was determined to find them, learn everything they know and make a killing of my own. I was determined to run my?trading as a business, not as a gambler, and that meant looking at opportunities,?supply and demand, marketplace dynamics and managing my business based on solid business fundamentals: profit, loss, expenses, overhead and return on investment. Like any business my only concern was to buy something that I could sell at a profit - and with enough of a profit margin so that my expenses (although small) were covered leaving me with a consistent and reliable income. The business of trading has all of these advantages. Once you know the system, this business can be managed in 15 minutes a day. It has all the makings of the 'perfect' business! The problem with creating a business based on the markets is that it seems like they are consistently changing and there is a lot of risk! As you know, the markets go up one day and down the next! I was really confused which way the market would turn, and since I hated the idea of losing money I tried to "predict" the market's direction because that's how I THOUGHT money was made. I got really, really good at 'technical analysis'... I THOUGHT that it held the key to profits... if I could tell where the market was headed it would be easy to make money, right? I learned all about waves and candle sticks, MACD, ADX, CCI, Bollinger Bands and Fibonacci and hundreds of chart 'patterns'... and I thought I 'knew' something' about the future of the market! Frankly, technical indicators are like crutches - they only help to support and validate your trading ideas already formed in your mind. They do not help you become a better trader or see the reality of the market. There are only 3 technical indicators you need to run this business: support, resistance and trend lines. That's' it. We keep it simple. Simple makes me money. I also discovered the TOP 1% of all traders do the EXACT opposite of what I tried to do when I first got started (predict the market)... The fact is... Top traders NEVER try to predict the market they only manage risk. Most of the elite traders don't care if the market goes up or down - they make money either way. They use charts sparingly. All top traders do is manage?their risk?and take advantage of the only truths of the market - the ONLY absolute truths of the market. For stocks that ONE Absolute Truth is this: 1) All stocks fluctuate in price. For options there are two Absolute Truths: 1) All options fluctuate in price and 2) All options expire. The top traders learn to respect these rules because they are the ONLY truths of the market. You might think there are other truths but there aren't-- Everything you hear about the market outside these 2 rules is hearsay, opinion, commentary and even complete fantasy. Of course you will never hear anyone on CNBC even mention these 2 rules because they would have nothing to report! Can you imagine Maria Bartiromo saying, "Prices fluctuated today. Have a nice evening everyone! I'm outta here!" I don't think so! So the top traders respect these rules because they are so powerful and it helps them cut through the 'market noise'. Then they design their trading business around these rules to TAKE ADVANTAGE of them. Once they see an opportunity they jump on it and simply manage?their business?'by the numbers' and, for me it takes 15 minutes - sometimes less - a day. How much can you make? Frankly, it depends on your capital, ability to learn, and your ability to maintain your discipline in this business. Don't be concerned about how much you have to start your investment business (even though I had a considerable amount of money I could invest, I started mine with a small amount so I could learn this business). Just learn the skills and reinvest your profits - they will grow quickly. Have you lost your CONFIDENCE? If you've lost money in the market it can destroy your confidence. My system will allow you to trade with 100% confidence again because instead of hoping to make a profit by guessing what to do, you'll have a plan. Remember what I said at the top of this letter... this is not about hype. I will never guarantee you will make money with this business because I can't tell how you'll use the information that I'm going share with you. Your success in your investment business depends on only one thing: The decisions YOU make. The only way for you to make the right decisions is by having superior knowledge. Once you understand how to REALLY make money, you will trade with total confidence. That's what I can do for you and I do not say it lightly, it's true. Also, I cannot give you official investment advice because I am not an investment adviser registered with the SEC and I am not a CFP (certified financial planner), so if you watch the videos and you see me trading a certain ETF or stock please do not interpret it as a recommendation. I can show you exactly what I do, and how I do it. I'll teach you virtually everything I know about this business; but the actual decisions you make with your money is up to only one person: You. I can tell you with a high degree of certainty though - There is no one who will tell you what I will share with you. No one. You could pay $5,000 or more to attend the top trading seminars, and you still won't learn what I'm going to teach you! I went to a $5,000 'high level', 'super advanced' seminar last year put on by a 25 year veteran - a former floor trader and market maker in options on the CBOE. I went to another 2 years ago that costs $3,000 and I got one tip from it - how to tell if a stock is in a "channel"... no kidding, that was it! 3,000 dollars! What I'm going to teach you will blow away anything that I learned in any of these seminars. I'm not kidding. In fact, I'd say, in truth, they were almost a waste of my money. I say 'almost' because they did help a little but?they lacked practical application of the knowledge they presented - it was mostly theory that left the attendee no better off, in practical terms, than they were when they started. This?course is?the real deal... It really works and very few people (even?professionals)?teach anyone how to do this. I know this for a fact because I've talked to some of the pros, and either they don't know this system, or else they are not willing to admit it. But there are a few guys who really know this stuff inside and out (one guy is sort of teaching this and the others are not teaching it at all). I found them and picked their brain over and over until I figured it out and came up with a system based on what they told me. Most of them didn't even know how to explain what they do-- it's like instinct to them and they couldn't express what they did in a step-by-step coherent way, so I really had pull it out of them. Then I put together what I learned, and came up with a complete business system that anyone can follow. I'll just say that I think it will surprise you how profitable and easy it is to run - and just 15 minutes a day is all you need. On the other hand, if you want to make this a full-time business - you can! There are plenty of opportunities to make even more money if you have more time to devote to this business. So let's see if you're the right kind of person to take this course: Have you been in the market as an investor and been disappointed with the results? Do you stay away from the markets because you think they are too risky? Are you confused by technical and fundamental analysis? Would you like to stop GUESSING which direction the markets are going, and take the professional approach to trading as a business? Does the idea of managing your business 'by the numbers' make sense to you? Does the idea of trading stocks and options as a real business sound good to you? If you answered 'YES' to any ONE or more of the questions above, I think you would be a good candidate for this training. Here's what you'll be getting in the course... There are a total of 41 videos within the course. The videos are grouped into several "Modules", with each Module containing 'hands-on' videos walking you through the topics covered. We use videos because you can SEE exactly what to do as you learn, and you can watch them over and over again (if necessary) to review and build your understanding. You can watch these videos directly on your computer...?we will give you a username and password to access them anytime of the day or night - whenever it's convenient for your schedule. In addition, you will have permanent access to these videos and you will also receive any new ones we add at a later date! The Modules in the course include: 1. INTRODUCTION TO TRADING AS A BUSINESS?& TRADING WITH CONFIDENCE This Module is designed to introduce you to a new way to trade stocks and options?- as a business. Emphasis is on risk management and building a portfolio of trades that can be managed 'by the numbers'. Learning the craft, acquiring the skills required to be successful in this business. This Module contains over 4 hours of great teaching! 2. THE GREEKS - MANAGING BY THE NUMBERS The 'greeks' play a critical role in your trading business. I totally de-mystify them and tell you exactly what the greeks are and, in practical, easy to understand language demonstrate how they impact your business. The greeks are the numbers you need to understand to manage your portfolio profitably. Special report included! I'm also including the most comprehensive, yet easy to read 5 page CONFIDENTIAL REPORT on how to profit from "The Greeks" available in the world (yes, the world, and no, I'm not kidding). 3. TRADE SELECTION AND STRATEGY We've set the stage, now it's time to get on with the work at hand. This is where things get good and interesting. What positions do we take? How do we determine when and how? Do 'charts' matter? What is the big picture behind what we're doing? This Module goes in depth with FIVE videos covering EEM, ADSK, DIA, SPY, and IWM (Don't worry, you'll understand it all later!) 4. PORTFOLIO BUILDING Build a portfolio by putting on positions that work together. This is where many traders go wrong - they put on individual positions and do not understand how they affect your overall portfolio. You'll discover why diversification in time frames, prices and strategies is a key to making money. This is simply fundamental to being a good investor. 5. THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE ThinkorSwim (TOS), in my opinion is the best broker and has the best trading platform available. If you had to pay separately for the kind of analysis tools they give you as an account holder it would cost you many hundreds of dollars a month in fees - with TOS they're free. I take you inside the TOS platform and help you access the power you have at your finger tips. (There are other programs/software that you can use to analyze your trades, but TOS is also free when you open an account.) 6. PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT BY THE GREEKS, ADJUSTMENTS, VIX and More... Now that we have built our portfolio, how do we manage it by the numbers? We learned the greeks, so now it's time to put them into action. The key to success is knowing how to look at the numbers and know, without a doubt, what they mean and what to do with them if anything. This module includes 5 killer videos with real life examples as I manage a portfolio. 7. THE ART OF ADJUSTMENTS - THE SECRET KEY What happens when our numbers don't look good? This is where 99% of all traders get killed in the market... they have no clue what to do when a position goes against them and they lose money. It's too bad because most trades can be saved to make a profit! Imagine making one small change to your position and increasing your odds of making a profit by 80%! That's what adjusting can do for you! In Trading As A Business, we KNOW what to do. We trade with confidence. We know and understand that when a trade goes against us it's an OPPORTUNITY to add to our portfolio by adjusting. I call it Smart Allocation of Capital. The art of adjustments is the missing link in trading options and stocks that almost no one teaches. 8. CLOSING POSITIONS How and when to close positions, and how to close them for maximum profits. The risks of holding positions into expiration week. When and how to 'buy' short-term insurance to protect your profits and increase your wealth in expiration week. How to close positions and get free trades left over that, although small, have a chance of DOUBLING our profits. This module contains 5 videos, and the key theme here is MAXIMIZING our profits! 9. THE BIG PICTURE - TECHNICAL ANALYSIS What kinds of technical analysis help us in our business? There are only a few key analysis tools that can help you determine the probabilities of market direction and I tell you exactly what those are. I'll give you insights into why the market moves the way it does. I'll also give you a historical perspective on market movements going back to 1900 and give you a realistic plan of attack for determining future market direction based on factual evidence. In the 2nd video, I dive into short-term indicators that can sharpen your edge in the markets to better time your trades. Then I tell you about an indicator I stumbled on, that predicts short-term and opening market direction with an amazing degree of accuracy close to 95% of the time as well as how to determine intra-day movements and how to tell whether money is flowing into or out of stocks and what it means for intra-day price trends. This module contains well over 3 hours of solid teaching. 10. ADVANCED TECHNIQUES AND EXPLOSIVE WEALTH BUILDING STRATEGIES Not even one of these strategies requires any knowledge of 'technical analysis' - it can help, but it's not required. These make money whether the market goes up or down. These are strategies you can manage based on 'the numbers'. One important thing I should mention: There are ways to make money that are NOT obvious. For example, Strategy #1 is something I have been studying for years, and it works every time and cannot fail to work. ? 11. Explosive Strategy #1 Using this one method I turned a $14,000 trade into a $75,000 profit in just 8 months. The most money at risk? Just $650. That was the total amount that was at risk when this position was initiated and NO more money was ever put into the position. Amazing profit/loss ratio. And it doesn't matter if the stock goes up or down but does require an longer time frame- 6 to 8 months. It is not uncommon for these trades to create the profits you can brag about. Want to make a killing in the market? It doesn't get any better than this. 12. Explosive Strategy #2 Another method I call "Flipping Stocks" let's me buy stocks cheaper than anyone else and if the market does not cooperate with my plan - I get paid lots of money for waiting until it does! This is for bigger players with more capital... but when you have $15k or more to put to work, these longer term trades generate explosive profits. I teach it to you in a nice 52 minute video 13. Explosive Strategy #3 This new strategy that has unlimited upside or downside potential and only $50 or so of risk! This strategy is extremely powerful and one of the biggest real 'secrets' that no one has ever discussed that I know of. Wait till you see the power of this strategy. You can make $1000's with a total risk of $50 or so. It's extremely powerful. Think there's no free-lunch on Wall Street? This isn't one either but it's as close as it gets to one! This is the perfect strategy for playing earnings reports, takeover news stocks and any stock you think will move big in any direction with little risk. 14. Explosive Strategy #4 If you want to be more active in stocks but hate the risk, you'll love this. Day trade without the risk normally associated with day trading. Can be setup to be an 'semi-automated' trading system. Very powerful and again another low risk, high earning strategy for more active participants. This strategy includes 9 videos, and I take you through some real life trades over the course of 7 days and show you exactly how I make thousands of dollars with these trades. I've also included 3 worksheets (Excel spreadsheets) for your convenience! 15. Explosive Strategy #5 If you liked the idea of the monthly income trades but were wondering how to 'turbo charge' them to make a fortune, then you will love THIS. Instead of $1000-$2000 a month you could start generating an income in the $5,000 to $40,000 a month range after learning this and with a lot less stress while trading as 'big' as you want. This last strategy is the 'icing' on the cake... the peak moment in all your hard study and will be worth 100 times what you paid for this course - maybe even more. Why didn't I reveal this until the very end of the course? Simple: You would not be able to use this strategy without a good foundation that was laid out in the earlier Modules. Everything we have learned thus far has been leading up to these explosive strategies. This Course Contains Over 40 Videos... Totaling Over 24 HOURS Of Me Teaching! The videos and modules are very well organized in an easy-to-navigate membership area, and they are sequenced in a perfectly logical order so that you can learn the system one step at a time. As I mentioned previously, you will not find this material anywhere else. The course will be delivered to you 100% online. I'M INCLUDING TWO FORMATS FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE: 1) Online Streaming. You can stream the videos directly in your browser (Flash videos, which are compatible with virtually all browsers), so you don't have to download anything if you don't want to. 2) Downloadable. You can also download the full resolution videos? directly to your computer. This allows us to provide you with the highest quality and clearest videos for you to watch. You may make one copy of these videos on a storage device (CD, DVD or external drive) but may not allow anyone else to view, copy or share them. They are for your use only. (with the exception of your spouse)?. So... what's the price? I've made this incredibly affordable so you can learn it without any serious financial stress. As I mentioned I have been to seminars for $3,000 and $5,000 and you will get much more from this course than both of those combined. I've also seen one trading course that charges $7,500 just for online access to learn the basics of options! So right there, you can see that the VALUE of this course is easily in the thousands. Therefore, I'm setting a strict limit, and if we don't completely sell out, the price will continue to go up! That's not a misprint. Second, I'm going to make sure that the membership area does not get bogged down by too many members. I insist that the downloads are nice and fast, so I will need to limit the membership. The doors may be closing at any time, so please grab your spot now if this is something you would like to be a part of. ? Email us at: support@tornadotradingsystem.com P.S.-? You could attempt to learn this by trial and error on your own, but I assure you it will be a MUCH more costly "education" than the one I'm offering you today for a very reasonable price. It cost me years of frustration, bad trades, and huge financial losses before I figured out the "secret" system. I've watched too many smart yet "uneducated" people lose their shirts in the stock market, and I don't want to see that happen to you. PLEASE... if you're going to invest your money anywhere, get my course so you can avoid the pain. I'll show you how to trade the low-risk, profitable way that will bring you profits regardless of whether the stock market is going up or down :-) ? ? ?
